INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER BT's Openreach division has roped in Nokia and Huawei to help upgrade its network to deliver download speeds of up to 330Mbps to 10 million homes and businesses by 2020.BT has already been working with the companies on the development of G.fast technology that BT is banking on to boost copper network speeds, rather than having to replace it all with fibre.The company hopes to have this in place for 10 million homes and businesses by 2020 to make up the bulk of its ambition to provide speeds of 100Mbps or more for 12 million homes by the same date.

BT's wholesale infrastructure arm Openreach has chosen China's Huawei and Finland's Nokia to provide a range of equipment to support its rollout of G.fast high speed fixed broadband access across the UK, BT announced in a press release.The two vendors have been working with Openreach on the 'world's largest trials' of G.fast in Huntingdon, Gosforth and Swansea, and will provide cutting edge switches, modems and cabinet 'side pods' to help deliver download speeds of up to 330Mbps – more than 20 times the current UK average – to ten million homes and businesses by the end of 2020, the press release continues.G.fast will also be deployed in Gillingham and Cherry Hinton later this year, whilst a wider rollout will form part of Openreach's wider ambition of expanding 100Mbps-plus broadband to twelve million premises by 2020, and the majority of the UK by the end of 2025.

BT's Openreach division has decided to enlist Nokia and Huawei for help in upgrading its network in order to ensure that is able bring up to 330Mbps to 10 million homes and businesses by 2020.The internet service provider has already begun developing its G.fast technology that will allow it to boost copper network speeds, saving it the hassle of having to replace those networks with fibre.Openreach is planning to have its network speeds increased by 2020 in order to reach its goal of providing speeds of 100Mbps or greater for 12 million homes by the same time.
